Locksmith help in South-Central Berkeley & Ashby BART

94703 takes in south-central Berkeley: the Lorin district around Adeline Street, the streets near Ashby BART and the residential grid between Sacramento Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Housing is mostly older single-family homes and two-unit flats, with a growing number of new apartment buildings close to the station.

Two kinds of calls dominate here. The first is lost keys: someone drops a key ring on the way to the train and wants the house rekeyed the same day so the lost keys are useless. The second is worn hardware: knob sets that spin without opening, deadbolts that only turn with a shoulder against the door, and strike plates that no longer line up after decades of settling.

Small businesses along Adeline and on the blocks around the Berkeley Bowl area call for rear-door security and key control. A master key system lets an owner hold one key that opens everything while staff keys open only their own doors.

Weekend crowds around the Ashby BART flea market and the busy grocery blocks mean many people park on side streets and walk. Keys get dropped, cars get locked with the key inside, and a locksmith call often starts with the question of exactly which block the car is on.

No. 05 Questions

94703 questions

I lost my keys. Should I rekey or replace?

If the locks work well, rekeying is usually enough. It changes the pins so the lost keys no longer fit. Replace only if the lock is worn out or you want a higher-security model.

Why does my deadbolt only lock when I push the door?

The bolt is hitting the strike plate because the door or frame has moved. Adjusting or moving the strike often fixes it without a new lock.

Can a small shop get a master key system?

Yes. The locksmith plans which keys open which doors, then pins the cylinders to match. Restricted keyways can be used so copies are harder to make.

Do I need to be there when the locksmith arrives?

Yes. You'll be asked to show ID or proof that you live at or manage the property before any lock is opened or changed.

My key broke off in my car door near the station. What now?

Leave the broken piece where it is and do not try to push it out with another key. A locksmith extracts it and checks the lock; a new key can usually be cut from the broken parts.
